Madaparty theme 1: Penguins!
I've so busy I didn't have time to prep anything so
Here's my first ever public fanfic!! Written in two days and almost completely unedited. I'm so tired I might actually be sick ngl.
Summary: When Private finds out that Rico's birthday is coming soon, he begs Skipper to throw a party. But things keep going wrong, and no one is sure they'll meet their deadline.
(can also be read on ao3!)
Skipper wakes up at six am on the dot, ready to take full advantage of his team's free schedule for the next week. The zoo had temporarily closed due to a ‘dangerous and unexplainable chasm’ that appeared in front of the entrance overnight the day before. He would be concerned if it weren't for the fact that he knew Kowalski and Rico snuck out to perform weapons testing that night. He gets his much needed coffee, before promptly turning all the lights to their highest settings.
“Up and at ‘em boys! We've got a packed day, full of team building exercises!” He grinned at his team's groans. Did they really think he wasn't going to use this opportunity to get in some bonding?
“Sir,” Kowalski groaned from his bunk, “with all due respect, do you really think team building exercises are the best way for us to spend the only free week we get until winter?”
“Positive, now on your feet soldiers!”
Private slid out of his bunk, looking half awake and like he'd lost a fight with his blanket it was so tangled. “Please, can't we have the week off? Or at least the day?” he looked at him with such pitiful eyes Skipper almost gave in right there, but his resolve remained strong.
At least until Kowalski pointed out that “Where will we even go? Our regular exercise area is under construction, remember?” He shot a look at Rico, who looked away nervously.
“Of course I do!” He had, he Just- didn't process that most of their team building exercises required the open area of the entrance to pull off. “But I guess if you're all going to be a bunch of nancy cats, we can wait until winter.” His team cheered, before Kowalski and Rico split off into the lab and garage respectively. Private moved to turn on the TV, until Skipper set a flipper in front of him.
“What do you think you're doing, soldier?”
“Oh- the Lunacorn’s movie is airing today! I was going to watch it before I got spoiled.” He shot him a bright smile and asked, “Do you want to watch it with me, Skippah?”
Skipper, who worked hard to keep his grimace under wraps, shook his head. “Negatory, Private. In fact, I have a very important mission for you instead,” he leaned close, “I need you to sort through the old files in our storage, and destroy all the unnecessary ones.”
Private looked disappointed, but nodded and walked off to where they kept the papers. Skipper wasn't lying, they really did need to get rid of those files, but he had another reason to keep Private away from the TV today. After all, he wasn't the only one whose favorite show had something new to watch. He flicked the channels until it landed on Shirtless Ninja Action Theater, and settled in to watch the new episode.
#####
Skipper leaned forward as the actor performed a near perfect spinning kick, landing so solidly he was almost convinced they were professionally trained. He cheered as their opponent went down easily, before the basement door slammed open with Private breathing heavily on the other side, a paper in his flipper.Private speaks before he can, gasping out excitedly “Did you know Rico's birthday is soon?” and pointing at the calendar in his flipper.
Skipper, who had gotten into a fighting position instinctively, blinked at him. It was soon, he thought, but he didn't understand why that fact set Private off like that. He kept going, though, asking “What are we going to do for it?”
“Same thing we do for everyone,” he shrugged. “Let ‘im sleep in and get him some good fish.” Private though, looked surprised.
“That's it? We aren't going to have a party, or do anything?”
“It's the way we always do it, Private. I know you've only been with us a short time, but you must've noticed that.”
Private shook his head sadly. Skipper sighed as he realized that this was going to become An Issue, and that he'd better cut it off now, before he got any ideas.
“Look, it's tradition. No need for it to be a big deal. Besides, what else would we even do?”
He regretted asking as soon as he saw Private’s eyes started to literally sparkle. “Can I please throw him a party?” he asked.
He was saved from crushing his dreams when Kowalski walked out of the lab. He glanced between the two of them.
Private rushed towards him, with stars in his eyes, and asked "Don't you think we should throw a party, Kowalski?"
Kowalski took a step back and shielded his eyes. “What- stop looking at me like that- what for?”
“The private wants to throw Rico a birthday party.”
Private jumped towards him, giving him the full force of his cuteness. “Oh, please Kowalski, don't you think I could throw a smashing party?”
“Well, I suppose we could, now that the zoo's closed, but-” Private shot him his most hopeful and adorable expression, and Kowalski couldn't resist. “You know, I do have some experimental firework designs I've been wanting to try…”
“Not you too Kowalski! Come on, have some sense. It's what we do every time!”
“Well, maybe we could try something new! Wouldn't that be grand?”
“It would be great team building!” Kowalski added.
The combined force of both their hopeful faces made him break. “Fine, you can have your party! But I'm sticking to tradition.”
#####
Private grinned as he climbed up the ladder and entered the zoo proper. He'd find the perfect spot for Rico, somewhere nice and pretty! He slid around the other habitats, waving to some of his neighbors as he went. Even though Skipper always maintained his distance with them, he couldn't help but want some relationship with the people he shared a zoo with, even if it was only cordial. In the distance he could hear someone complain about the lack of guests, and how ‘on days like these they don't even brush my mane, can you believe them Marty?’.
He climbed up on top of a fence for a better view of the zoo, hoping to have something jump out at him. Nearby, he noticed an empty habitat that looked promising, and he slid over to it. When He jumped onto the ledge overlooking it though, he almost fell back in surprise. The habit was a wreck, with scratches on the walls, holes in the floor, and odd staining everywhere. He was worried to even try and take a closer look with how close it looked to collapsing in on itself. It clearly hadn't been taken care of since whatever animal was inside was removed. He decided to move on.
The next spot he found was similar, perfect until he looked closer. The others were much of the same. He moved through the zoo, stopping at any spots that looked promising, but couldn't find anything good enough. He'd begun to feel a little saddened, doubtful he'd find any place at all, until he stumbled on somewhere perfect. It was tucked in-between two habitats, one full of cute little hedgehogs and one full of nice sea lions. It had a beautiful mural on the wall behind it with a bunch of lovely sayings, and over the wall you could hear the sounds of children laughing at a nearby playground. It would be perfect.
Except it didn't feel right. Something about imagining Rico here felt wrong, even though Private thought it was the perfect spot!
Maybe he just- needed a change in perspective. He imagined himself as Rico, being here looking at this spot, and that's when it clicked. When he thought about it, of course Rico wouldn't like this spot. The other residents were too nice, the mural was too mushy, and the laughter grated on his ears. Of course he wouldn't want a party here. And, honestly? He wasn't sure it would be a good idea to have the kind of party Rico liked here.
He'd find a better spot, one that fit with his new understanding of what it needed. He couldn't think of any he'd seen, so he turned to look around even more, but realized in shock that there was no more zoo to search. He'd have to find something outside the zoo then.
But Private soon realized he didn't know anything about the park that surrounded the zoo, and as he hopped over the wall, he didn't know where to begin. As he began wandering around, he checked for any good areas and avoided any humans. So caught up in this was he that he ran right into someone.
“Oh, I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention,” he exclaimed.
“It is alright,” a voice with a heavy Spanish accent responded. He was a tall, well built otter with green eyes and a relaxed smile. “What has you in such a rush?” he asked, holding out his hand.
Private smiled back and took it. “I'm trying to find a spot for a friend's birthday party,” he answered, “I don't suppose you have any suggestions? I don't come here often,” he added nervously.
The otter thought for a moment, and then lit up. “I do, if you go towards the east you will find a lake perfect for penguins like you.”
Private beamed, thanking the otter before running in the direction he'd been pointed towards.
#####
Kowalski groaned as he slammed his head on his desk. What was supposed to be a quick and easy build and rest process had spiralled incredibly, and now he only had three days until Rico's birthday. At first, he'd only realized the weight distribution was off, that the fireworks wouldn't even be able to fly without going wildly off course. With the area Private described for the location, that would go beyond bad right into disastrous. So he switched to a lighter fuel source. When he ran the test again though, the fuel wasn't strong enough to lift more than the slightest bit of the ground.
This had been going on for days. Not a single attempt had worked, and not only was he running out of options, but also materials. So he'd taken to carefully sketching out designs and writing the calculations, scraping anything that had a hint of failure. He was so close to giving up, scraping the whole project and coming up with something more basic. But he wanted this to work, because for all his doubts he knew Rico would love them.
He scribbled out another attempt. He just had to find a balance between weight and fuel. But, as Kowalski checked his numbers again, and marked another failure, he realized that-
There wasn't anything left. He had exhausted every possibility, every set of values had ended in failure. He'd have to invent an entirely new design, build one from the ground up, and Kowalski knows he's good but even he couldn't do that with the time and materials he had. He puts his head into his flippers, willing himself to calm down and think of a solution. He looked back to his diagram.
If the weight wasn't a problem, then he could just have it fire off small amounts of fuel at a time, but it is, so if he could just solve that-
He stopped. Looked at his paper. And began to form an idea.
Because, maybe, he could get rid of the need for it to be lightweight, because what if they didn't need to fly? After all, fireworks weren't the only type of celebratory explosions, and he could change the input-
“Eureka!” Kowalski cried out, and he began to sketch a new design for grounded fireworks.
#####
Skipper huffed to himself as he snuck past the construction crew, not like they were paying any attention. He hitched a ride on one of their outgoing trucks into the city proper, aiming for the fish market he always got the team’s gifts from. Really, he didn't know why Kowalski and Private insisted on making it so complicated. If they hadn't combined forces like that- well, he'd probably still be here, the night before the party, getting fish. But it's the principle of it all!
Besides, birthdays weren't a big deal, they were just a sign that you were getting older and closer to retirement. That didn't need celebrating.
But, here he was. Preparing for a party he doesn't see the point in and won't enjoy, just for his boys. At least the number of explosions from the lab had gone down drastically, so either Kowalski figured out his problems or he gave up.
Skipper leapt off the truck in front of the market. It was closed, but that didn't mean much to an agent like him. But when he slipped inside, it was empty. Not just of people, but of fish too. Everything was gone.
It was a trap, it had to be. Maybe by Hans, or worse- Blowhole! He moved deeper in, sticking to shadows, when he came across two workers. He listened for more information.
“You idiot! How did you not place a single order!? It's your one job!”
“Look, Jamie told me he was handling it! So I took the day off, and I came back to no orders and an empty market!”
“And you trusted him to do that, why? Kids only been ‘ere a week. It's why we only have him stock.”
“Yeah, I know Kam. But I had to get home quick, what with Mary and-”
Skipper decided to stop listening. It wasn't a trap, just a supposed mistake, but that still meant he needed to come up with a new gift. Not a big deal, he knew Rico well enough to have another plan. It would be even better than Private's and Kowalski’s, he decided. He slides towards where he knows a toy store is, and slips in through a vent. His eyes scan the aisles until they land on his goal. A large box of doll clothes sat, and he cracked it open with glee.
He began sorting through them, picking out anything that might fit Rico's lady friend. He ends up with a sizable pile, and he's sure he'll find something perfect.
Until he actually starts looking through them.
“Too glittery,” Skipper said to himself, “too cheap, too gaudy, way too revealing, this is being sold to kids?” he shook his head. Was there really nothing? He continued.
“Too frilly, too bright, is that tie-dye? Hippies.” He'd reached the end of the pile, with absolutely nothing to show for it. That wasn't good. He didn't have a backup-backup plan. He began to wander, hitching another ride. He looked at the stores they passed, contemplating. He'd known Rico the longest, out of his remaining team. Surely he knew him well enough to come up with something?
Suddenly, something caught his eye. In the window of a shop was something so beautiful, he knew it would be perfect. A set of blades, with wavy patterns on the blade, and expertly carved handles. Skipper hopped off the car he'd rode, which had parked anyway, and snuck towards the shop.
He let out a low whistle. They were even better up close, and he could just imagine them carving through meat. He slipped into the shop unnoticed to pay for them.
#####
Rico woke up, feeling more rested than he should with how late he stayed up last night, and knew something was wrong immediately. Because even though the lights are off, he can see out the windows and it is very bright out. When he checks, no one else is in their bunks. The only reason they were allowed to sleep in was if someone was in bad shape, and, when he thought about it, birthdays, but he would definitely have remembered one of those. His team has been acting weird for days, looking weirdly smug and going out for a long time each. He should've known something was wrong-
He jumps as he hears the lab door open, and turns to see Skipper walk out with Kowalski. “At ease, soldier. What's got you all worked up?”
Rico blinked at him. He gestured to the not-quite dark HQ, and to the empty bunks. Skipper raised an eyebrow and shared a look with Kowalski.
“Rico, do you remember what day it is?” Kowalski asked, looking like he was trying not to laugh. At Rico’s blank look, he sighed. “Did you really forget your own birthday?”
His eyes widened, and he clapped his flippers together. Not only was nothing wrong, but it was his birthday! But, as he looked around for his special breakfast, he noticed not only were there no fish, but Private was still missing. He turned back to the others, who were now sitting at the table. “Fiiish?”
Skipper looked at the clock on the wall. Just as he began to answer, Private slid into the room smiling. “It's all ready! Now we just have to wait for- oh! Hello Rico!”
Now he was curious, but he didn't get to ask anything before Private began ushering them all forward. He led them through the tunnels until Rico was sure they had left the zoo area. They finally entered the park through a hatch, but Private stopped.
“We want this to be a surprise, so you're going to need to wear this!” He held out a white blindfold, the same one they used for training. Rico glared at it before putting it on. He was led further, until they came to a stop. He thought he could hear water nearby.
“Okay, you can look now!” As Rico pulled off the blindfold, he looked around. There was a small shack, well taken care of, and a large concrete pad around it. Set on a picnic blanket he didn't even know they had, he saw a container full of huge fish. In the middle of the concrete were some weird looking machines that were probably what had Kowalski looking so smug all week.
“I bartered with some of the bigger animals for some of their fish! I also got everything you could want for sushi,” said Private, “I thought we could eat while we watched what Kowalski put together.”
“Before we do that,” Skipper cut in, “how ‘bout you open your gift first?” He gestured to a package he hadn't noticed earlier, and when he tore through the paper, he let out a gasp. They were beautiful, handcrafted blades, perfectly sharp. They were perfect, he thought as he cut though the fish like it was paper.
“Kitchen knives! Good thinking, Skipper,” said Kowalski, coming back from making adjustments to the machine, “it’s primed and ready whenever.”
“Then let's eat so we can watch this light show!”They all made their sushi, then sat on the blanket and watched as the machine lit up. It began to fire off bright sparks of every color, random at first, then splitting off into different shapes. It was incredible, and impressive that Kowalski had managed this.
With its last few sparks it spelled out, in red and blue letters, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICO”. He clapped when it was over, cheering. He saw Skipper smile next to him.
“Well boys, I think Operation: Celebration was a success, don't you?” Everyone agreed.
“Does this mean we can do this for everyone?” Private asked.
Skipper rolled his eyes, but still smiled. “I guess we could. We can make this our new thing.” Rico smiled excitedly. This was so much better than tradition.

thinking of rereading the entirety of HoME again. for my health
#‘for my health’ says the woman who has been struggling so much she’s barely read a book in the last half year lmao#silmarillion#(eh close enough)#tolkien#personal#also because I got so viscerally appalled when someone the other day tried to claim that ‘the second age has a lot less written about it tha#n the first age’ like I beG YOUR PARDON LMAO WHOMST#clearly someone hasn’t read unfinished tales 🙂‍↔️ clearly someone hasn’t read the entirety of HoME 🙂‍↔️#and like obviously idc idc I’m not a completionist truther read as much or as little of a fandom as you want enjoy what you want etc.#but when I went ‘oh there’s actually a lot in unfinished tales and in the home! it’s rly fascinating and fun and some of my favorites have y#ou had a chance to check it out ever?’ this person rly had the audacity to say they’ve ’read some of the unfinished tales’ like hm. somethin#tells me I don’t believe you lmao#I have never once in my life heard someone call. unfinished tales. the book. titled unfinished tales. ‘the unfinished tales’ like lmao what#anyways. it’s okay to admit you haven’t read something babe I was actually gonna recommend a few parts of that book and HoME you might enjoy#but 💋 okay then 💋#also normally I’d give ppl the benefit of the doubt but this person is Like This TM a lot and always has to outdo others & im over it lmao#but also also anyways. I am not immune to the HoME rereleased editions with that gorgeous artwork they are calling me and I am weak to#resist their siren song 😭😂 they’re so beautiful but each set of like 3-4 books (some have 3 some have 4 and the last one also has an index)#are like. over $100 each lmao ripppp.#I do own a few of the HoME but I don’t own all of them and. aaaaaa I need a complete reread#13 yo me 🤝🏻 late 20s yo me : going ‘hmm life is crazy maybe I need to immerse myself in the obscurent most dense Tolkien lore I possibly can#and yknow what. we’re so right. we’re so right#the history of middle earth#unfinished tales#and that conversation. as weird and posturing as that person was being. did get me reminiscing about my HoME obsessed days and I was like aw#I should revisit that :)#sometime self care is rereading 12 volumes of obscure lore about a fictional world with no one to talk with it about#anyways home my beloved. unfinished tales my beloved. love those books#obviously OBVIOUSLY I love the silmarillion and LOTR and the hobbit and beren and luthien etc etc ad infinitum as well! ofc! > be a robin buckley fan
> be lesbian
> project on robin
> look up "internalized homophobia robin buckley" on tumblr because it's cathartic
> 3/4 of the posts are about st3ddie or just about steve
#saw one in which steve was like ''no robin you don't understand! i have never been loved! i don't know how that feels like!''#i have several grips about that interpretation#going from the fact that's not true (dustin is clearly a big steve fan + robin herself cares about him deeply)#to the fact he probably wouldn't be introspective enough to voice his emotions this concisely not to mention he'd probably wouldn't take#a moment to realize he's never felt loved if that were the case. i mean. he could think that. when he's like 35 and more in touch with his#inner world. 19yo steve can't even get the hint that hitting on a girl who's already clearly taken (nancy) is wrong so like i don't expect#him to be that smart#but i can live with people having takes i don't agree with. my opinion doesn't have to be everyone else's opinion if you see steve that way#it fine#what bothered me was the fact he was saying this to a lesbian living in the 80s lmao#who tells him that 1) her whole life has been an error 2) she doesn't think he'd want to be close to her if he truly knew her and 3)#3) is paralyzed by fear of social suicide if she dares believe for even a second that the girl she likes may like her too#like i dont need people to do deep dives into robin lore and quote from memory lines from Surviving Hawkins abt robin feeling like she's#rotten inside. not supposed to have friends. feeling like something is wrong with her and that pushes people away etc etc#the fact that she's a lesbian should tell you enough abt who has the biggest chances of being loved 😭#also bothered me that it showed up when looking up posts abt internalized homophobia because?? where's the internalized homophobia therw#unless it's gay steve feeling bad abt it in an AU (as if canon robin didn't go through it)#like look im not bothered to find steve-centric content in the robin tag cos people are gonna tag her in posts mentioning her.#she's his friend.#but there are barely any posts at all about robin's internalized homophobia. like i saw 2 or 3. compared to all the steve or steddie ones#where's the love for my babygirl 😭😭#anti steddie#not really but y'know i don't wanna bother anyone#edit: the bit about there being like 3 posts on robin w internalized homophobia isn't exactly true. there are a few. but they still feel#drowned in st3ddie posts#like something isn't right here

God I fucking love mixed weapon fighting so much, just being able to go at it with the thing you're most comfortable with against someone else using the thing they're most comfortable with is so cool and awesome, coming up with strategies to a weapon set you don't use and testing them against someone doing the same, it's so rad tbh
Makes me sad that so many places I've fought in regard it as like, an afterthought at best

falling behind
for @jegulus-microfic prompt: hands (wc: 780)
“I can’t do it,”
“Of course you can!”
“I don’t want to. Good luck dying,”
“No one is going to die Regulus, stop being dramatic,”
“Dramatic?” Regulus snaps at him, “we are on a hanging wooden bridge, 61 meters from the ground with no harness or safety measures whatsoever and you are calling me dramatic?”
James looks around at the wooden bridge, moving a little making the bridge move with him, then he shrugs.
“Seems pretty sturdy to me.”
From the way Regulus is glaring at him, James knows he wants to punch him in the face but it’s too busy holding onto the rail for dear life.
James huffs a laugh at the same time a voice calls from the other side of the bridge.
“Oi, are you coming or what?” Sirius calls, the others seems further away following the trail but Sirius seems to be waiting for them both.
James turns around and it only takes one look at Regulus' pale face to know he’s not letting that rail go anytime soon.
He turns around to Sirius.“We are going in a minute, why don’t you guys ahead? we'll catch up with you later,” he assures him.
Sirius seems a little hesitant, looking behind James, at his brother, but eventually he nods.
“Alright, see you guys in a bit, don’t take too long,”
“Wouldn’t dream of it!” James calls back watching Sirius disappearing between the trees.
He turns back to Regulus.“I have an idea,” he says.
Regulus scowls at him, sensing what’s coming. “It better be good,”
“It is, don’t think you’re going to like it though,”
“Oh?”
James doesn’t say anything, he only holds a hand in front of Regulus.
As soon as he understands the offer, he shakes his head furiously. “Absolutely not, I’m not six years old James, I don’t need you or anyone to hold my hand just because I can’t seem to cross a stupid bridge!”
James remains silent, waiting. His palm up, open, inviting. Waiting for Regulus whenever he’s ready.
It takes some time, not as much as James thought it would but enough that his hand is getting heavy. Regulus is still holding onto the rail with both hands but little by little, his grip loses and he lets his right hand move away from the rail and towards James' outreached hand.
When Regulus’ hand is finally on top of his, James intertwines their fingers together. He squeezes once before he takes a step forward, nudging Regulus to follow him.
He does, one hand still gripping the rail and the other gripping James’ so tightly it’s kind of cutting his circulation but James never let go.
When they are one third through the bridge Regulus’ grip gets even tighter and when James looks at him, he notices it’s because he’s looking down at the dangerous river running wildly below them.
“Hey,” James calls him and Regulus’ gaze snaps up. “Eyes on me, love,”
A faint blush covers Regulus’ cheeks but he doesn’t acknowledge that, instead he says, “Tell me something, anything, before I lose my mind over here.”
James seems to think it over but when he settles for something, he smiles sheepishly at Regulus. “Did I tell you the time a bunch of street dogs chased me for five blocks trying to get a hold on my burger?”
Regulus shakes his head, trying to fight back a smile.
James is gesturing wildly, recalling the events with so much enthusiasm Regulus keeps laughing whenever he tries to impersonate the dogs.
Regulus' eyes don’t leave James’ for a second.
And before they know, they are at the end of the bridge.
They come to a stop.
“We did it,” Regulus says, looking at the trail in front of them. James nods.
“Yeah, we did,”
Neither of them move. Neither of them let go of each other. Because moving away from the bridge means moving away from each other.
James is breaking his head trying to come up with an excuse to stretch their moment a little longer but he can’t seem to get a word out of his mouth.
Regulus can.
“Did I even tell you the time a squirrel stole my lunch?” he says softly, still looking at the path in front of them.
James’ chest feels warm at the confirmation that Regulus doesn’t want to let go either. He grins when he looks at him. “No, you haven’t,”
Regulus finally looks back, a smile tugging at his lips. “It’s surprisingly a long story,”
“I happen to have time,”
They walk away, chatting and laughing, unconsciously gravitating towards each other, like they can’t help themselves.
They are still holding hands.

fic rec list (2/??)
Wow folks, back again! I got motivated so here I am, making another list!!
PSA: As always, make sure to leave a comment on these fics (or really any fic) you choose to read. It doesn't have to be much, but please remember, fandom is a community. We should not mindlessly consume anymore. Don't take those authors and fics you love for granted, give them the praise they deserve.
Also Note: these are recs that I've read more than a year ago, so forgive me for being vague. There's a high possibility I don't remember much except main plot points (and maybe even not that). And I don't have enough time to reread them all (I wish I did).
Without further ado:
DC (mostly batman)
Reverse Robins: Joker Junior series by miyaji_08 (complete)
Tim Drake centered. Basically he's joker junior, shenanigans occur, especially in the second one.I LOVE THESE. I am not kidding when I say I have read these two fics multiple times over. The writing style is incredible. The batman family feels very unified, which is at odds of canon but I'm a sucker of family <33. And it is reverse robin, but such an interesting take. Tim isn't Red Hood (joker junior as it says in the title), but he does kill people I believe. Idk it's been a while. Anyways, If you find the concept of reverse robins interesting, this one is definitely a must-read!! The second one also features the core-fore mildly so there's that to look forward to.
when doves cry by Scarlet_Ribbons (complete)
This is a masterfully written one shot. It's gorgeous and painful in the best ways possible. Tim drake centric (wow seeing a theme here eh) with brother Jason Todd. This is a sort of drakes were neglectful type fic but that's not the main focus. I think it was more about Tim and Jason's relationship. This was BEAUTIFULLY written. The author is terrific at what they do and my eyes were blessed.
zugzwang by sardonic_sprite (complete)
I don't remember much of this one, but I can remember the association of angst I felt with it. It was a good read, but do be mindful of the tags for triggers or anything of the sort. It features Ra's and Tim, and it's just owiefaksdfkwkf. Now I gotta go reread it wow. Maybe this list is just a reread list for me lmao.
you are somebody's baby; some mother held you near by nosecoffee (complete)
oh man. This is a one shot btw. I just reread this because the title hit me in the gut and also to refresh my memory. And holy cow. This was omg. Neglectful Drakes and baby Tim. It was hurt/comfort. It's a really good read and I recommend it fs.
Testosterone cypionate, 50 mg by lesbianmaki (complete)
Oneshot! This is the first one shot I read with trans Tim and it was brilliant. I love the interactions in this fic and I'm glad it introduced me to this head canon! I think Jack Drake is an alright parent? very mediocre in this but not abusive I don't think from what I can recall. Great writing <3
Running Rings 'Round by justapoorboy (incomplete 2/4)
This is a crack-ish fic, but I enjoyed it immensely. It really spoke to my soul in critiquing the status of the healthcare system through its ability to favor the rich and really leave the poor to fend for themselves. Basically Tim and morally-grayness occurs through his entrance to the black market (?? Sort of??). I'm not describing it very well, you'll just have to read it and see ig.
Can't Stay Down (a documentary) by SonoSvegliato (complete)
Tim gets his tonsils out (wow he's down a lot of organs lmao). The amount of effort the author put in is clearly visible. I don't recall much other than good dad bruce and so much comfort. It was great!!
Statue of Limitations by Oka_Hills1232 (complete)
BILLY BATSON. Aren't you guys glad its something other than batman (I know I am, wow I had a phase). One shot of Billy revealing his age to the justice league and shenanigans occur. This is hilarious and I remember mentally giggling so much during it. It's so fun and if I ever have a bad day, I would want to end it off with this, just to make things better.
The Time Lost in Between by Magical_Devil_Alex (complete)
ANOTHER BILLY BATSON. Oh captain marvel, here to save us from the excess batman. Oh never mind, this is centered around batman and captain marvel. I vaguely remember this fic and Billy is trying so hard to outmaneuver the world's greatest detective and it is brilliant. It's a great concept and executed very well! Terrific!!!
Settle Our Bones series (Idk if it's complete but there are 8 works)
Okay I'll be honest I don't really remember anything about this and it's too long to reread. (wow am I secretly dory) Here's what I do remember tho: The characterization Is magnificent. Everyone has their flaws, especially because of past traumas/events and their actions make sense and I don't ever see them as irrational. It's a fix it of Jason never dies but Tim is still there for the ride. I believe there's bad parents Jack and Janet, but I'm not 100% sure. It's a great (and long) series so definitely read it if you can <3
Just A Kid by sardonic_sprite (incomplete 3/?)
Jason Todd and his goons and ig the bats added to the mix. That's it. It's hilarious and the humor is *chefs kiss*.
A Good Soldier by VioletVain (complete)
I was locked into the idea of social media AUs in the DC universe, and that's where this came in. It's one of the best social media AUs that I've seen from whatI can remember. It's great, IT basically talks about the debate of in-universe outsiders talking about child soldiers and just robin. Great take on internet discourse that would undoubtedly occur within the DC universe!
stay gold by airyfaerie (complete)
OH MY GOSH. I VIVIDLY RECALL THIS ONE SHOT. This was a gorgeous fic dedicated to Damian and Duke's relationship, especially as people of color. It talks about their different cultures and Damian's experience with his culture. This is especially important to me because the amount of times I have seen people white-wash characters within fandom spaces is insane. BUT THIS ONE. This one, you can tell the author has done their research or knows their stuff, because the feelings that Damian emits, I can feel. I feel seen with this fic. With complex undertones and how do you find your place in a world that is so different from your culture. It talks about food and. Im just, it's gorgeous and PLEASE READ IT AND COMMENT ON IT I BEG.
The other works in the series are terrific as well!! This is just the one that struck me right in the heart and I will forever yell about it.
robin's roast by envysparkler (complete)
This concept is so funny. Jason coming back just to be a coffee shop owner. I loved it!! It's a fic about Jason getting back to the family and STEPH!! Oh how I've missed her.
shut eye by audreycritter (complete)
oh wow. complex mother Janet, oh how I love complex female characters. The exploration of the mother/son relationship that Janet and Tim possess. This is beautiful and intricate and it touches my heart. Everyone's just trying and sometimes that's not enough and its just *sigh*. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous writing. But then again, anything by this author is beautiful. It's a sign for all of you to binge everything this author has written RIGHT NOW.
A children's story by TheResurrectionist (complete)
"4 batkids walk into a bank" great summary of it truly. It was a funny fic and please! I sound like a broken machine but do read this one too!! It's *mwah*.
A classic cold brew by Chimie_Chat (incomplete)
alternate universe!! This was my first damijon (Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent) fic that I've read and it is the reason I like the pairing. It's such a cute little coffee shop AU, where Jon is a barista bc poor guy just wants a car and Damian is a regular. It's great!! I'm so glad this was my introduction into the damijon ship.
Straight on Til Morning by Merils (complete)
OKay,, THIS IS THE KON EL AUTHOR AND THE KON FIC. This Is what got me to read earlier comics and really superman comics as a while. The author is spectacular and really knows what they are doing. I could rave on and on about this fic. Kon and his relationship with growing up and adult hood and what was his adolescence ( did he even really have one ).
There is timkon, but that is definitely not the full focus of this fic and do not focus on the bats when the supers have such a complex relationship with each other. KonEl is spectacular and this fic really shows his chracterization and his relationships with other characters like Clark and his father/brother/uncle who even knows type relationship with him, And then the core four too!!. PLEAE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS I BEG OF YOU ON MY KNEES AND UNDERSTAND HOW BEAUTIFUL TH ESUPERS ARE AND OMG
Cross-Over
The Tailor Universe by LittleInkling64 (main work is completed)
This is so cute!! Marinette and Jason Todd get paired up together. I think Jason thought Marinette was some trafficker but soon realizes she isn't and they help each other out (sort of). I don't remember much but I do recall it was great !!
okay that's enough for now. I did this one in one sitting too. Im gonna go to sleep.
